What is Renaissance Faire (Ren-Faire or just Faire) ?

Ren Faire is a combination of many things.
It is partly a craft fair,
partly historical reenactment, its partly performance art.
Everyone working at Faire dresses in costumes (or garb)
typical of the late Elizabethan period.
There are many booths selling both crafts and food.
Parades that wind their way through the crowds,
Jugglers, musicians, magicians,
and other entertainers perform throughout the day.
You wander about, examining goods for sale, sampling foods,
and watching plays and performers.
Fairegoers meet with these creative artisans
to learn about how each wonderful item is handmade,
and to pick up valuable tips for use and care.
Potters, clothiers, jewelers, glass blowers, ironmongers,
leather workers and other crafters are masters of their trade,
having spent years developing their skills and techniques.

At Faire you can see treasures from afar
at the Traders Market,
jewelers, potters, painters, sculptors, blacksmiths,
wood workers, leather workers.
You can find masks made of feathers, leather & paper mache.
A marbler, candle makers, sculptors,
a broom maker, and a doll maker
all sharing their fine artistry to produce their wares
so that you can take some of the magic home with you.

If you are not a working member at Faire
realistically you can wear whatever you please.
There are no dress codes
but you may find yourself getting more into the mood
should you adopt proper clothing or something close.
The larger Faires have clothing booths
where you can rent clothing for the day
and changing in front of other people
into unfamiliar clothing is always lots of fun!
Finally, you can make your own clothing,
or you can buy clothing at faire.
Many people go to faire, purchase outfits, and show up the following weekend wearing them.

In the research I have done as well
as having visited the faire here in Southern California,
I have learned some information that I will freely share:
The lower class often used leather in their garb
because they could get this material from hunting.
Lower, or working class shoes were simple clogs or slippers of leather, Working men often wore leather aprons and long pants
instead of short breeches and hose.
All Elizabethans wore hats.
You can wear a straw hat, leather, fabric,
or felt hat bedecked with a feather or ribbons.
Bodices can be made of tapestry material,
of a heavy embroidered fabric or out of light leathers
(using natural shades)
